The substance composing the pearl is identical with the iridescent lining—mother-o'-pearl or nacre, as it is termed—of the shell. Tortured by the intrusion of some living thing, a boring parasite, a worm, or a small fish, or of a grain of sand or other inorganic substance, and without means to free itself, the mollusk perforce neutralizes the irritant matter by converting it into an object of beauty that eventually finds its way into some jewelry cabinet.
Pearls are still popular today but were revered in various times of history. At one time in the Far East, they were looked up more favorably than diamonds. Did you know one of the reasons for that is diamonds weren't fully appreciated until the discovery of the brilliant cut.
Were you born in June? Do you enjoy your birthstone? At one time round pearls that were the "most" round (and lustrous) were virtually the only highly valued pearls. But today irregular pearls such as baroque pearls and coin pearls are valued by many. Some enjoy them more than the "perfectly round" pearls because they are more interesting to look at for some.
Are you looking for something special in your pearl birthstone? Consider more valuable Tahitian Pearls, South Sea Pearls, or Akoya Pearls.
Designers today also specialize in jewelry with a combination of materials and pearls are organic so they look beautiful with leather and/or other gems. Some like the combination of pearls and Swarovski Crystals as well.
